In order to assist you in understanding our adoption program, we have provided the following information:
· All information requested on the adoption application is vital in successfully determining the best match between you and a companion bird. Once you have completed the application and submitted it to MPEBS, we will process your application.
· All applications are reviewed and processed according to our Adoption Policy, which involves reviewing our database for a suitable companion bird, performing reference checks, contacting you if we require clarification or more information and arranging a home visit with you.
· We will contact you to arrange the "initial home visit". The initial home visit serves a dual purpose; it allows you to ask more in-depth questions about the bird you are interested in and it allows us to determine whether your choice is appropriate for your environment and family. An example would be: if you lived in an apartment, a cockatoo may not be the right choice as they are well known for their vocalizations and can be quite loud. We would then suggest a more appropriate bird. All members of the family should participate in this visit.
· At the conclusion of our "initial home visit", we will be able to determine whether a bird is for you and whether we should proceed with the adoption process. Please keep in mind a bird is not for everyone and we have a responsibility to make the appropriate decision for the well-being of the individuals concerned as well as the bird being considered for adoption.
· If the initial home visit has been a success, arrangements will be made to attend your home with your new companion bird. We will provide you with a list of your companion's likes and dislikes such as favorite foods and toys, what makes him/her nervous, safety precautions, health care concerns and much more.
An Adoption Agreement will be presented to you for your signature, a cash payment of the adoption fee will occur at this time. The Adoption Agreement you sign is very specific. The bird(s) cannot be used for breeding purposes, cannot be sold, traded, or given away. The bird must be returned to MPEBS if, for any reason, you can no longer keep the bird and MPEBS will find another suitable home for the bird.
The Adoption Agreement also states that an adoptive home must keep MPEBS posted of any change of address and phone number for as long as the bird resides with you. We require this information because it allows us to follow up with you periodically to ensure everything is going well or to check to see if there is any assistance we can provide to you.
